About

Black-and-white portrait of Valerius Geng.

I work with historical photographic processes. I explore the possibilities of these techniques, most of which were developed in the nineteenth century, and combine them with my own ideas for images. I use both modern reproductions of historical photographic equipment and original wooden cameras and lenses from the first half of the twentieth century.

“From the first moment I handled my lens with a tender ardour, and it has become to me as a living thing, with voice and memory and creative vigour.”

— Julia Margaret Cameron, Annals of My Glass House(written in 1874, first published in 1890)

In these words, I recognise my own relationship with my cameras and lenses. Each has a character of its own for me, and working with them creates a sense of personal familiarity.

I am interested in photography’s ability to preserve something of an irretrievable moment. Every photograph shows a moment that has already passed by the time we look at it. In the daguerreotype, this idea takes on a particular form: the image appears on a mirror-polished silver surface prepared to be sensitive to light. Its visibility changes with the light and the viewing angle. Even a slight movement can reveal a prismatic play of colour that shifts the tones from warm to cool — as though different images were appearing on the same silver surface. Sometimes this image seems to me like a breath of Mother Nature — captured on the silver, a reflection of our reality that remains preserved for many years, perhaps even centuries.

“Imagine now that the mirror has retained the impressions of the objects reflected in it, and you have an almost complete idea of the daguerreotype.”

— Jules Janin, “The Daguerreotype” (1839)
